Why Nigerian artistes charge high fees for performance – Bella Shmurda

Popular Nigerian singer, Bella Shmurda, has explained why many artistes in the country charge high amounts for performances. According to him, the high cost of running a music career makes it necessary for artistes to demand large performance fees to cover their expenses.

In a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, Bella Shmurda revealed that the music business is expensive and that artistes spend a lot to create quality songs, produce videos, and promote their work. He added that a significant part of what musicians earn goes into paying producers, songwriters, and engineers who help bring their music to life.

The “Cash App” crooner also mentioned that as public figures, artistes spend a lot maintaining their image and lifestyle. “I don’t repeat clothes because I’m a public figure. I spent $100,000 to pay producers, songwriters, and engineers that worked on my album. That’s over ₦100 million, not to mention the cost of music videos and promotion,” he said.

Bella stressed that musicians are not overcharging promoters or event organizers but simply trying to recover their investments. “When I go for a show, I charge what equates to my investment. Even if I don’t make profit, I should at least recover my cost. So, we are not overcharging — if you see it from our point of view, you will understand,” he explained.

He concluded by urging fans and critics to understand that behind every performance fee are countless expenses that go into producing music, building a brand, and keeping up with the demands of fame.
