INEC: Amupitan takes over as Chair, makes promises to Nigerians

The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians of his commitment to delivering credible, free, and fair elections across the country. He made this pledge on Thursday while addressing INEC staff shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu.

Prof. Amupitan emphasised that one of his major goals is to restore public confidence in the electoral process by ensuring that every vote truly counts. He noted that his immediate focus would be on the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, urging all INEC staff to uphold the principles of transparency, impartiality, and accountability.

The new INEC boss also pledged to prioritise staff welfare, recognising that a motivated and well-supported workforce is key to achieving the Commission’s objectives. He described his appointment as a divine responsibility, calling on all staff to remain dedicated to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

“Let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly for credible elections,” Amupitan said. “We must not compromise our processes because the integrity of our elections is non-negotiable. The tasks ahead are challenging, but together, we can achieve them.”

Amupitan further assured that his administration would make concerted efforts to improve the working environment and provide necessary resources to ensure that staff can perform their duties effectively.
