Don’t resort to coup, settle differences at the polls – Laolu Akande

Former presidential spokesman Laolu Akande has advised politicians dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to channel their grievances through democratic means rather than resorting to military intervention. Akande made this statement on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, reacting to reports of an alleged attempted coup against President Tinubu.

According to Akande, Nigeria must reject any idea of returning to military rule, stressing that all political disagreements should be resolved at the ballot box. He said the military authorities should be commended for their swift action in uncovering and preventing the alleged coup attempt involving some senior officers, including a brigadier general.

“If it’s true that there was an attempt to have a coup, we must commend military intelligence for nipping it in the bud,” Akande said. He added that those who are unhappy with Tinubu’s leadership should “fight him at the polls, not with guns.”

The former Osinbajo aide further emphasized that Nigerians must speak with one voice against military intervention in politics. “We don’t want coups to be used to settle political differences anymore. If you disagree with the president, go and vote him out during elections,” he insisted.

Akande also urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by registering to vote and holding leaders accountable through constitutional means. “This is how a nation grows – through elections, transparency, and citizen engagement, not through coups,” he concluded.
