Outrage as FCE Obudu provost suspended over vehicle auction

Tension has erupted at the Federal College of Education (FCE) Obudu in Cross River State following the suspension of the institution’s Provost, Dr. Richard Utubaku, for three months. The suspension reportedly stems from allegations that Utubaku conducted an unauthorized auction of unserviceable college vehicles, an action the Governing Council claims violated due process.

The decision has divided opinions among staff and students. While some support the Governing Council’s disciplinary move, others argue that the suspension is unjust and politically motivated. Civil rights group, Rescue Support Initiative (RSI), has strongly criticized the development, calling it a breach of fair hearing and a violation of civil service procedures.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar, RSI Country Director, Barr. Ayie Okpa, urged the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to wade into the matter. “We are not saying Dr. Utubaku is above questioning,” Okpa said. “However, suspending him before issuing a formal query violates civil service rules and Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing.”

The group further alleged that the Governing Council acted hastily, describing the suspension as an abuse of process that casts doubt on the council’s motives. They called for a transparent investigation to determine whether due process was truly breached.

Dr. Utubaku, in his defense, maintained that the auction followed all established procedures, insisting he has nothing to hide. The Rescue Support Initiative appealed to the Minister of Education to review the case urgently and ensure justice and fairness are upheld within the institution.
