In a surprising move, U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized the demolition of the White House’s East Wing to make way for a lavish $250 million gilded ballroom. The new project aims to expand the historic building with a luxurious event space designed in Trump’s signature grand style.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, heavy machinery was seen tearing into the East Wing, which has stood for more than a century. Witnesses, including journalists and White House staff, described the sound of loud banging and crashing as construction crews began the demolition.
President Trump had earlier said that the ballroom construction would not disturb the existing building. “It won’t interfere with the current structure,” he stated. “It will be near it but not touching it — total respect for the White House, which is my favorite building.”
However, recent developments suggest otherwise. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that “necessary construction will take place,” explaining that the East Wing will be “modernized” as part of the larger renovation plan. The administration says the ballroom will host official events, state dinners, and major ceremonies once completed.
The project has already sparked debates among preservationists and political observers. While some say the move reflects Trump’s love for grandeur, others argue it risks altering a significant part of American history.
