Northern monarchs meet in Kebbi over rising insecurity

Traditional rulers from across Northern Nigeria have gathered in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, for a crucial two-day meeting aimed at finding solutions to the worsening insecurity and other socio-economic problems affecting the region. The meeting is being led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who serves as chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC).

The conference, which began on Tuesday and will end on Wednesday, is being hosted by the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, while Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State officially declared it open. The gathering brings together several first-class traditional rulers representing different northern emirates and communities.

Among the royal fathers who arrived in Birnin Kebbi on Monday are the Emir of Kagara, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna; the Etsu Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar; the Shehu of Bama, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Kyari Umar El-Kanemi; and the Emir of Biu. The dignitaries landed at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport before proceeding to their various lodgings.

Shortly after their arrival, the Shehu of Bama and the Emir of Biu paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, at his guest house in Birnin Kebbi. Their discussions reportedly centered on peace, unity, and collaboration among northern communities.

The meeting, organized under the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, is expected to produce actionable recommendations for addressing banditry, kidnapping, and poverty in the region. Participants hope the resolutions reached will support federal and state government efforts to restore lasting peace in Northern Nigeria.
