‘He’s stronger than I imagined, a champion’ – De Zerbi hail Gabon’s Aubameyang ahead of Nigeria clash

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has showered praise on Gabonese forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff against Nigeria’s Super Eagles. The highly anticipated match will take place on November 13 in Morocco.

Nigeria secured their playoff spot after a dramatic 1–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, thanks to a late strike from Frank Onyeka. The result set up a tough semifinal clash against Gabon, who will be led by the in-form Aubameyang.

Aubameyang has been in outstanding form during the qualifiers, scoring seven goals in five matches for his national team. He has also impressed at club level, netting four goals and providing four assists in eight games for Marseille this season.

Speaking to Le Phoceen, De Zerbi described Aubameyang as a complete and hardworking player. “He’s a true champion and stronger than I imagined,” the coach said. “He’s not only a goalscorer — he creates assists, adds speed, and works hard for the team.”

With Gabon’s star man in red-hot form, De Zerbi’s words serve as a clear warning to Nigeria’s defense. The Super Eagles will need to be at their best to stop the experienced striker from making an impact in the crucial playoff game.
