Gov Otti’s ‘write-your-will-before-you-rig’ comment Not A Threat – Abia Govt

The Abia State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s recent remark advising those planning to “write election results” to “first write their wills” was a threat. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the government explained that the Governor’s words were figurative and rooted in his firm belief in the rule of law and electoral integrity.

According to the statement, Governor Otti’s comment was made during the October edition of his monthly media session, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks.” The government clarified that the remark was not a call to violence but a strong warning against electoral malpractice and result falsification, which are criminal offenses under the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Section 128.

The statement further emphasized that the Governor’s message aligns with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which vests sovereignty in the people and forbids any attempt to subvert their will. Otti, the government said, remains committed to ensuring that Abia State becomes a model for free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria.

Highlighting the Governor’s peaceful leadership style, the government noted that since assuming office on May 29, 2023, no one has been unlawfully detained for political reasons in Abia State. It described Otti as a leader who believes in dialogue, justice, and due process, not intimidation or political vendettas.

Reiterating the administration’s dedication to democracy and good governance, the Abia Government called on citizens and political actors to interpret the Governor’s comments within their proper legal and constitutional context. It stressed that under Otti’s leadership, Abia is building a new era of transparency, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights, putting an end to the old culture of electoral manipulation.
