Igbo community in Lagos bans use of ‘royal highness’, ‘royal majesty’ titles

The Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State has taken a firm stance against the unauthorized use of royal titles, warning traditional leaders to refrain from using designations such as “Royal Highness” and “Royal Majesty.” The directive was issued following an emergency meeting of the community’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and executive council to enforce discipline and uphold the constitutional structure among its leaders.

In a statement signed by BoT Chairman Chief Jonathan Nnaji and President Chief Sunday Ude, the community emphasized that the only recognized traditional title is Eze Ndigbo. The leadership noted that self-proclaimed titles like “Obi of Lagos” or other royal claims have caused confusion within the Igbo community and among host communities in Lagos.

The statement clarified that any individual who continues to use unapproved titles would be deemed in violation of the community’s constitution and may face disciplinary action. The Igbo leadership urged the public to disregard anyone falsely parading such titles, reiterating that the community operates under a legally recognized structure.

Beyond addressing title abuse, the Igbo community appealed to members to promote unity, respect the law, and maintain peaceful relations with other ethnic groups in Lagos. Residents were also advised to exercise caution in property dealings, ensuring proper verification of land ownership documents and compliance with state regulations before construction or purchase.

The directive reflects the community’s commitment to order, accountability, and harmonious coexistence within Lagos State. The Igbo leadership urged all members to act responsibly and support the formal structures that guide cultural and traditional practices in the state.
