The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State has arrested at least 280 drivers for attempting to bribe its officers between June and October 2025. The revelation was made by the Sector Commander, Mr. Innocent Tommy Etuk, during a live interview on HIT FM Calabar, where he discussed safety measures for motorists during the Ember Months.
Etuk emphasized that both those who offer and those who accept bribes will be punished, urging drivers to avoid corrupt practices at checkpoints. He noted that the arrests were part of the FRSC’s broader strategy to discourage motorists from promoting extortion among officers. “Since my assumption of duty in June, we have arrested 280 drivers who tried to compromise our men. This shows that corruption will not be tolerated under my watch,” he stated.
The commander also advised road users to record and report any extortion attempts by officers, assuring that such cases would be thoroughly investigated. “We have strict internal mechanisms to deal with any personnel found guilty of misconduct,” Etuk added, stressing that the FRSC maintains zero tolerance for bribery, extortion, and assault on the highways.
During the live radio session, several callers expressed frustration over alleged harassment and extortion by FRSC personnel, especially around Calabar and Atimbo Road. Some recounted incidents where officers impounded their vehicles or demanded money despite complete vehicle documentation. A caller, Joshua Imo, claimed he was assaulted after refusing to pay ₦500 to officers along the Akpabuyo route.
In response, Etuk appealed for mutual respect and understanding between motorists and FRSC officials, noting that collaboration is essential to ensuring safer roads. “We are all partners in the mission to make our roads safer,” he concluded.
