Renowned media entrepreneur and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has shared his thoughts on why former Bayelsa senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time program, Momodu said Murray-Bruce’s defection was not shocking, describing it as a move driven by political convenience. He noted that the APC currently appears to be “where the road is smooth,” suggesting that politicians often move to ruling parties for personal or strategic reasons.
Momodu, who also publishes Ovation Magazine, expressed mild surprise at the defection, recalling that Murray-Bruce previously worked with the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign. However, he acknowledged Murray-Bruce’s constitutional right to freedom of association and movement, saying every politician is entitled to make decisions they believe will advance their goals.
The veteran journalist added that some politicians have genuine motives for changing parties, particularly when they believe their aspirations can be better achieved elsewhere. According to him, “nothing shocks me anymore about Nigerian politicians,” as party switches have become a common occurrence in the country’s political landscape.
Momodu concluded by saying that those who remain in the opposition are often viewed as “very stupid” or “not smart enough” for refusing to join the ruling party. He described this mindset as unfortunate but reflective of how political loyalty and principles are often undervalued in Nigeria’s current system.
