CAF Awards: Ajibade, Okoronkwo nominated for Women’s Player of the Year

Super Falcons stars Rasheedat Ajibade and Esther Okoronkwo have been shortlisted for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award, following their outstanding performances at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Both players were instrumental to Nigeria’s impressive run in the tournament under coach Justine Madugu. Okoronkwo was one of the standout performers, scoring two goals and providing six assists to help the Super Falcons advance deep into the competition.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who led with determination and flair, contributed one goal and two assists, further cementing her reputation as one of Africa’s most consistent forwards. Their nominations place Nigeria among the top contenders once again for continental football honours.

They will be competing against eight other top African players, including Zambia’s Barbara Banda, who clinched the award in 2024. The recognition reflects the growing dominance of Nigerian women’s football on the African stage.

Fans and analysts alike are hopeful that one of the Nigerian stars will bring the CAF Women’s Player of the Year trophy back home, continuing the country’s rich legacy in African women’s football.
