We’ll examine that option – Amupitan on INEC taking over LG elections

The newly confirmed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has stated that the commission will examine the possibility of taking over the conduct of Local Government elections from State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).

Amupitan made this known during an interactive session with journalists shortly after his confirmation by the Senate. He said the idea of INEC conducting local polls is worth serious consideration, given growing public concerns about the credibility of elections organized by state electoral bodies. According to him, Nigerians deserve truly free, fair, and transparent elections at all levels of government.

The INEC Chairman noted that while the current constitution empowers SIECs to oversee local government elections, many of these bodies have failed to meet national standards. He explained that the issue would require both legal review and stakeholder consultations. “We will examine that option carefully, taking into account constitutional provisions and the need for credible local governance,” he stated.

Amupitan also assured Nigerians that his administration will focus on electoral reforms aimed at deepening democracy and restoring public confidence in the electoral process. He added that the commission would strengthen the use of technology, ensure timely voter registration, and promote inclusiveness, especially for women and youth.

He emphasized that credible local government elections are vital for grassroots development and accountability. “Local governments are closest to the people. If we get elections right at that level, governance will improve significantly,” Amupitan concluded.
