Stop playing politics, propaganda with everything – Wike tells Peter Obi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to stop using politics and propaganda in every situation. Wike made the statement on Thursday during the commissioning of Esther Bali Street (ILS 11) and Kez Udezue Street (MAR 24) in Mabushi District, Abuja.

Wike’s remarks came in reaction to Obi’s recent visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, where the former governor lamented the poor condition of the school and the absence of toilet facilities. Responding to this, Wike said Obi should have informed him about the situation instead of making it a public issue, adding that the project he commissioned was brought to his attention by concerned residents who acted responsibly.

The FCT Minister criticized Obi’s record as former governor of Anambra State, alleging that he deposited state funds in banks to earn interest rather than using them for development. Wike stated, “Instead of developing Anambra, you put the state money in Fidelity Bank where you had a lion share. The people suffered while you made profits.” He argued that Obi’s administration had eight years to transform Anambra but left unfinished projects.

Wike further challenged Obi’s recent public gestures, such as celebrating his birthdays in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, describing them as political stunts. He said, “Doing your birthday in an IDP camp does not prove you love Nigeria. When you were governor, why didn’t you do that? Who are you deceiving?”

He concluded by urging Obi to refrain from unnecessary criticism, stating that his two years in office as FCT Minister should not be compared to Obi’s eight-year tenure in Anambra. Wike emphasized that genuine leadership should be about service delivery, not propaganda or showmanship.
