A man identified as Lawal Faruq has been taken into custody for allegedly setting his lover, Omolola Hassan, on fire after a heated quarrel at the Odogbo Military Barracks Mami Market in Ibadan, Oyo State. The shocking incident reportedly followed the breakdown of their romantic relationship, which ended in violence.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the dispute between the pair escalated when Faruq, angered by the breakup, allegedly doused Omolola with petrol and set her ablaze. The horrifying act caused panic in the market as people rushed to help the burning victim.
Fortunately, military personnel on duty quickly intervened, putting out the fire and rushing the woman to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo, where she is said to be receiving urgent medical care. According to sources, the suspect told investigators that he and the victim had sworn an oath never to separate, a claim now being examined by authorities.
Security officials at the barracks confirmed that Faruq has been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing to uncover what truly led to the violent outburst. The case has sparked outrage among residents, who have called for justice and stronger measures against gender-based violence.
The tragic event has once again highlighted the need for emotional control and peaceful conflict resolution in relationships, as well as the importance of protecting victims of domestic violence within both civilian and military communities.
