Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has described Nigeria’s recent performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (WCQ) as a huge disappointment. Speaking on an international sports programme, the ex-player expressed frustration over the Super Eagles’ inconsistent form, saying that a team with such talented players should be doing far better on the global stage.
Onuoha said it was painful to see Nigeria struggling against teams they were expected to beat comfortably. He emphasized that the Super Eagles’ inability to secure key wins has left many fans questioning the team’s strategy, preparation, and leadership. According to him, the squad needs to rediscover its fighting spirit and play with more urgency.
He added that Nigeria has one of the most gifted squads in Africa, with players competing in top European leagues, yet their results have failed to reflect their quality. “It’s not about talent anymore; it’s about mentality, consistency, and tactical discipline,” Onuoha noted.
The former England youth international also urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to take decisive steps in addressing issues affecting the team, such as poor game management and lack of motivation. He called for renewed focus and accountability from both players and technical staff.
Fans across Nigeria have also shared similar sentiments, expressing disappointment over the team’s recent draws and missed opportunities. Many are hopeful that the Super Eagles will bounce back stronger in the remaining World Cup qualifying matches.
