Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has described the recent demolitions at the Lagos International Trade Fair complex as “heartbreaking.” Kalu expressed deep concern over the impact of the exercise on business owners who lost their shops and means of livelihood. He urged both federal and state authorities to find a more humane and sustainable solution that balances development with the welfare of citizens.
The Deputy Speaker stressed that many traders have invested their life savings into the market and now face uncertainty. He called on the relevant agencies to provide relief measures and consider the economic implications of such actions, especially amid the current hardship in the country.
Kalu further emphasized that while urban renewal is necessary, it must be done with empathy and fairness. He encouraged peaceful dialogue between the government and affected traders to prevent future conflicts and restore trust.
