The North-Central APC Forum has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to resist growing calls for the creation of state police. The group argued that such a move could be dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy, warning it may give governors unchecked powers that could be abused against political opponents.
According to the forum, the existing security structure only needs reforms and better funding, not duplication. They stressed that creating state-controlled police could fuel more insecurity, ethnic bias, and political intimidation, which might worsen Nigeria’s fragile unity.
The group further urged federal authorities to strengthen the current Nigeria Police Force through training, modern equipment, and fair welfare packages. They noted that with proper reforms, the national police can effectively handle security challenges without dividing control among states.
