A newly established trucking company supported by Dangote has formally written to the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), stating that its drivers have rejected membership in the union. The letter emphasized that the drivers prefer to work independently without union affiliation.
The company explained that the decision was driven by the desire for greater flexibility and improved working conditions, which they believe can be achieved without external interference. It noted that drivers voluntarily chose not to be part of NUPENG, dismissing reports that they were forced to opt out.
This move has sparked conversations in the oil and transport sector, as it highlights ongoing tensions between corporate trucking firms and unions. Industry watchers say the development could reshape labour relations in Nigeria’s petroleum transport sector in the coming months.
