Iraq resumes Kurdish oil exports after two-year halt

Iraq has officially restarted the export of crude oil from the Kurdistan region after a two-year suspension. The halt, which had strained both the Iraqi central government and the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, came to an end following renewed agreements on revenue sharing and export management. This move is expected to boost Iraq’s oil income and strengthen ties with global energy partners.

The suspension had caused heavy financial losses for both sides, while also creating uncertainty in the international oil market. With the resumption, Iraq aims to stabilize its economy, increase daily oil output, and reassure foreign investors who had been hesitant due to the prolonged dispute. The deal also highlights efforts to mend political and economic differences between Baghdad and Erbil.

Analysts believe that resuming Kurdish oil exports could improve Iraq’s global oil market position and provide much-needed revenue for reconstruction and development. However, experts also caution that long-term stability will depend on consistent cooperation between the federal government and the Kurdish authorities to avoid a repeat of the past shutdown.
