Tragedy struck in Zamfara State after an illegal mining site collapsed, leaving at least eight people dead and many others injured. The victims were said to be workers engaged in unregulated mining activities when the ground caved in.
Emergency teams and locals rushed to rescue those trapped, but the scale of damage highlighted once again the dangers of illegal mining in the region. Reports revealed that poor safety measures and uncontrolled excavation contributed to the disaster.
Authorities have since warned against illegal mining, stressing that such activities not only endanger lives but also deprive the government of revenue. Residents, however, continue to turn to it due to lack of other economic opportunities.
