Gunmen attacked a passenger boat traveling along the Calabar waterway, kidnapping several people on board. Among the passengers was the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), who narrowly escaped the incident along with a few others. The attack, which has left many in shock, once again highlights the growing insecurity on Nigeria’s waterways.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants intercepted the boat mid-journey, forcing passengers into confusion. While some managed to escape, others were whisked away by the gunmen to an unknown location. Security agencies have since launched a search-and-rescue mission to ensure the safe return of the abducted passengers.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for tighter maritime security across coastal states, as criminal gangs increasingly use waterways for kidnappings. Authorities have assured the public that measures are being taken to curb such attacks and restore safety for travelers.
