Don’t See Taxes As Punishment, FIRS Boss Tells Nigerians

The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, has urged Nigerians to change their perception of taxes, stressing that taxation should not be viewed as a form of punishment. He explained that tax is a civic duty and a key tool for national development, as it provides the government with the resources needed to build infrastructure, improve services, and strengthen the economy.

Adedeji noted that the government is committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of tax revenues. According to him, citizens will be more encouraged to pay taxes when they see visible results, such as better roads, healthcare, and education. He emphasized that tax collection is not just about revenue but about building trust between the government and the people.

The FIRS boss further explained that taxation remains a sustainable alternative to borrowing, which has burdened the nation’s economy with debt. He said that by broadening the tax base and ensuring compliance, Nigeria can generate more revenue internally and reduce reliance on loans. He assured that the government is working on reforms that will make the tax system fair, simple, and beneficial to all.

Adedeji concluded by calling on Nigerians to play their part in nation-building by paying their taxes promptly. He reminded citizens that every tax contribution, no matter how small, goes a long way in supporting growth and development, making Nigeria stronger and more self-reliant.
