Rivers State Government Seeks Full Utilisation Of Seaports

The Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to ensuring that seaports within the state are fully operational and utilised to drive economic growth.

Speaking on the development, state officials noted that despite Rivers’ strategic coastal position, its seaports remain underutilised, forcing most businesses to depend heavily on Lagos ports. This situation, they explained, has placed unnecessary strain on Lagos while limiting Rivers’ capacity to benefit from its maritime potential.

According to the government, unlocking the full capacity of Rivers ports will not only decongest Lagos but also create thousands of jobs, attract foreign and local investment, and boost trade across the South-South region and beyond.

The state further stressed that improved port utilisation would make import and export processes easier for industries in the Niger Delta, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall economy.

Officials assured that discussions are ongoing with relevant federal agencies and private investors to reposition the ports for efficiency and modern operations.

“Rivers State cannot continue to watch its seaports lie dormant while our economy suffers,” a government source said. “We are committed to reviving them for the benefit of our people and the entire country.”
