Trump adding $100k fee to H-1B visa application in latest crackdown on foreign workers

U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a fresh immigration policy targeting foreign workers, announcing a hefty $100,000 application fee for H-1B visas. The executive order, set to be signed on Friday, September 19, is part of his administration’s continuing crackdown on migrant labor.

The H-1B visa program, which allows skilled workers to enter the United States, has long been a lifeline for tech companies and other industries. However, the Trump administration argues that the program enables firms to exploit lower-wage workers, thereby hurting U.S. salaries.

Heavy Costs Ahead for Employers

With the new rule, any company seeking to hire foreign workers must pay the additional six-figure fee before entry is granted. Analysts warn this could push up recruitment costs significantly. While tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta—which collectively secure thousands of H-1B approvals yearly—may absorb the hit, the burden could prove overwhelming for smaller firms and start-ups.

Impact on Tech and Innovation

Critics say the move could damage America’s long-term competitiveness. Venture capitalist Deedy Das warned on X that “adding such huge fees discourages the world’s brightest minds from coming to the U.S.,” potentially slowing down innovation and growth in sectors that rely heavily on global talent.

Who Uses the H-1B Program?

Government figures show that about two-thirds of H-1B jobs are in computer and tech roles, but the visas are also widely used to fill positions in engineering, healthcare, and education. India remains the largest beneficiary, accounting for 71% of approvals last year, followed by China at nearly 12%.

With Trump’s new executive order, many fear the U.S. could lose its edge in attracting global talent, creating ripple effects across industries that depend on foreign expertise.
