United Capital Losses Six Staffs In Lagos Afriland Towers Inferno

The tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, has now claimed 10 lives. United Capital Plc confirmed on Thursday that six of its staff members died in the inferno, according to News360 Nigeria.

This sad news follows an earlier statement from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which revealed that four of its employees also lost their lives in the same fire that swept through the six-storey building on Tuesday.

Reports suggest the fire began in the inverter room at the basement around 1:30 pm before spreading quickly. Thick smoke filled the building, leaving many occupants trapped and scrambling for safety.

Videos from the scene captured frightened individuals climbing through windows as emergency workers tried to put out the flames.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said nine victims were rescued. Out of them, five were revived, while four others remained unconscious at the time.

In a heartfelt statement, United Capital Plc expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of its employees, describing them as valuable members of the company.

“Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void,” the firm said. It also promised to support the families of the victims and honour their memory with a special service.

With this confirmation, the official death toll from the Afriland Towers fire has risen to 10. However, emergency agencies are yet to release a full report on casualties. Eyewitnesses insist that some people were unable to make it out alive.
