Jose Mourinho returns to Benfica 25 years after first spell as manager

Jose Mourinho is making a sensational return to Benfica, 25 years after his first spell in charge of the Portuguese giants.

According to Sky Sports, the 62-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Lisbon club, marking a full-circle moment in his managerial career. Mourinho, who was recently sacked by Fenerbahce following their Champions League exit, arrived in Portugal from Barcelona on Wednesday night, where excited fans welcomed him by draping a Benfica scarf around his neck.

Speaking to reporters, Mourinho admitted that the chance to coach Benfica was too good to turn down. “When I was faced with the possibility of coaching Benfica, I didn’t think twice. I’m interested, I’d like it,” he said. His first stint in 2000 lasted only 10 games before he resigned following a change in club leadership, but it was the beginning of his journey to becoming one of football’s most decorated managers.

Mourinho went on to achieve legendary success with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma. His return to Benfica comes after the club parted ways with Bruno Lage, following a shocking Champions League defeat to Qarabag. Mourinho is expected to take charge before Benfica’s weekend clash with Vila das Aves, and his comeback will add extra drama to their upcoming Champions League tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge later this month.
