Abia State Ombudsman tackles injustice, rights abuse, treats 39 complaints

The Abia State Ombudsman says it has treated 39 complaints and petitions since it began operations. The cases involved rights violations, administrative delays, disputes among public servants, and disagreements between private individuals.

Head of the Commission, Justice Kyrian Nwankpa (Rtd.), made this known in Umuahia. He encouraged citizens facing injustice to submit petitions, assuring them their complaints would not be ignored. He added that while some matters are still pending, recommendations have been sent to relevant agencies.

Justice Nwankpa described the Ombudsman as a “beacon for grassroots justice”. Backed by the Abia State Ombudsman and Citizens’ Rights Commission Law 2025, the body provides an independent channel for people to lodge complaints against government agencies and officials.

He explained that the Ombudsman does not handle criminal cases but helps build trust between citizens and government institutions. He also said the commission needs more Commissioners to function better and praised Governor Alex Otti for establishing it.
