Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced plans to criminalise same-s3x marriage and what he called “immoral practices” in the state. He said the step is necessary to protect the cultural and religious values of Kano, which is mostly a Muslim state.

According to him, the proposed law is also aimed at stopping the growing influence of Western culture, which he believes is affecting young people negatively.

Religious leaders and community elders in Kano have expressed support for the move, saying it will help maintain discipline and morality in society.

While many residents of Kano welcome the decision, human rights groups may strongly oppose it. Same-s3x marriage bans have been a controversial subject in Nigeria, drawing both support and criticism.
