Infant di£s after mom’s boyfriend allegedly bashed in her skull during assault

A one-year-old baby girl in New York has tragically passed away just a week after she was allegedly attacked by her mother’s boyfriend.

The child, identified as Imani Mitchell, suffered severe head injuries that forced doctors to remove part of her skull in an attempt to save her life.

She was rushed to Harlem Hospital in the Bronx on August 28 after 19-year-old Jerome Thomas, who was left to watch her, reportedly struck her twice on the side of her head with heavy force. The brutal blows caused her to cry and left her in critical condition, according to prosecutors.

Medical reports revealed that Imani had severe internal bleeding in her brain, which caused swelling and dangerous pressure. Doctors performed surgery to remove part of her skull, but her condition remained critical.

Despite being placed on a ventilator and given every possible life-saving treatment, the little girl could not survive. She was pronounced dead on September 5, and the New York Police Department ruled her death a homicide.

Thomas had been arrested on August 29 and was initially charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held without bail at Rikers Island.

Authorities have said his charges may now be upgraded after a grand jury review, with his next court date scheduled for September 18.

The fatal attack reportedly happened inside the family’s apartment on Union Avenue in the Bronx, after the child’s mother left her in Thomas’ care.

Neighbors said the family had recently moved into the building. One resident, Nicole LaCroix, recalled spending time with Imani, describing her as a lively and playful baby who loved playing with her phone. She also revealed that arguments were frequently heard from the apartment.

According to LaCroix, the couple fought almost every night, exchanging insults and breaking up repeatedly, only to reconcile shortly after. She expressed regret for not stepping in sooner, saying she wished she had done more to help.

The heartbreaking death of baby Imani has left the community in shock, raising concerns about domestic violence and child safety.
