Ange Postecoglou agrees deal to become next Nottingham Forest head coach atter Nuno Espirito Santo sacking

Ange Postecoglou has agreed to take over as Nottingham Forest’s head coach after Nuno Espírito Santo was sacked early on Tuesday.

Postecoglou left Tottenham at the end of last season despite winning the Europa League, as the club struggled in the Premier League and finished 17th.

He has been in talks with Nottingham Forest over the past few days and is expected to manage his first match against Arsenal this Saturday.

The new contract is set to run until the summer of 2027, and the club could announce it as soon as Tuesday.

Forest’s Greek owner, Evangelos Marinakis, has admired Postecoglou for some time. The coach, who has Greek heritage, previously managed Celtic and Spurs.

In July, Marinakis honored Postecoglou in Greece for becoming the first coach of Greek origin to win a European men’s football trophy.

“Ange has often spoken about Greece,” Marinakis said. “It is important to be proud of your roots. He achieved success with a team that was not winning titles and made Greece proud.”

Postecoglou has been out of work since leaving Tottenham in June, just over two weeks after leading them to Europa League glory.

During his two seasons at Spurs, he ended the club’s trophy drought but struggled in the league, finishing 17th.

Nuno was relieved of his duties on Monday after tensions with Marinakis surfaced this summer.

Although he had received a new contract in June following Forest’s first European qualification since 1995, there were problems behind the scenes.

He reportedly had a poor working relationship with the club’s global head of football, Edu Gaspar, which also affected his relationship with Marinakis.

Nuno criticized the club’s transfer activity and hinted at his future, saying, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

Nottingham Forest released a statement saying, “Nuno Espirito Santo has been relieved of his duties as head coach.

We thank him for his contribution, especially during the 2024/25 season, which will always be remembered fondly. He will always hold a special place in the club’s history.”
