The Lagos State Police have confirmed that five bodies discovered along the Oreta riverbank in the Igbogbo community of Ikorodu were killed in a cult-related attack.
Residents of the area were alarmed when the bodies of young men were found by the riverside last weekend.
This incident is part of a growing number of cult-related attacks in Lagos, which have already led to the arrest of more than 26 suspects, according to police reports.
State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, told Punch on Saturday that new security measures are being implemented in Ikorodu and other high-risk areas in Lagos.
He confirmed that the killings were linked to cult activities and stated that investigations are ongoing.
“The bodies were recovered, and our scene-of-crime experts have examined the area. We have given specific directives for further investigation and will share the findings publicly,” the CP said.
Jimoh explained that anti-cult units have been set up in every police area command, with a central team at the state headquarters to manage cult-related violence.
“I have established anti-cult teams in all commands. Parents and guardians should advise their children against cult involvement, as attacks and counterattacks continue. Through regular patrols, we’ve been able to manage the situation in recent days,” he added.
The CP also mentioned that specialized units have been deployed to coastal areas to ensure public safety.
“Our coast strike force is active in Lekki, working around the clock. The areas are now peaceful. Regarding the five bodies, investigations confirm it’s cult-related. Arrests continue, following the 26 suspects already in custody,” he said.
Jimoh stressed that cultism is no longer limited to idle youth; even skilled workers and artisans are now involved.
He highlighted the success of anti-cult operations in Mushin, saying a similar approach is being applied in Ikorodu. Residents are encouraged to go about their normal activities, as security forces have the situation under control.
The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Hammed Aroyewun, through his Chief Press Secretary, Oluwaseun Ajayi, said the incident caused fear in the community but was met with a prompt response from the Council.
