US President Trump administration ‘considering banning trans people from buying guns’

The U.S. Justice Department is reportedly considering ways to prevent transgender individuals from purchasing guns.

According to CNN, these talks are still in the early stages and were prompted by a recent shooting at a Catholic church in Minnesota, which left two children dead and 17 others injured. Officials said the shooter was transgender.

The New York Post also reported similar discussions, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. A spokesperson for the Justice Department stated that the department is exploring ways to prevent violence by people with certain mental health or substance abuse issues, but no official policies have been proposed yet.

Such a move would create a conflict for the Trump administration, as it would have to balance the Republican Party’s strong support for gun ownership with efforts that could limit the rights of transgender Americans. This is not the first time the administration has taken action against transgender rights.

In the past, Trump banned transgender people from serving in the military and required that government-issued identification documents reflect only a person’s biological sex at birth.

Gun rights groups, such as Gun Owners of America, have spoken out against any form of firearm restrictions, stating clearly that they oppose bans targeting any group of people.

The discussions show the tension between public safety concerns and the protection of individual rights, leaving the issue open for debate.
