A 21-year-old University of Kentucky student and cheerleader was taken into custody after authorities discovered her newborn baby’s body in a trash bag inside a closet.

Laken Snelling, 21, was arrested on Sunday, August 31, after police received a call about an unresponsive infant at a residence near the campus in Lexington, according to the Lexington Police Department.

Police reported finding the baby wrapped in a towel inside a black garbage bag in a closet, according to WLWT.

Authorities confirmed that Snelling was the mother of the baby, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

During questioning, the cheerleader admitted to giving birth, Lex18 reported, citing the police statement.

Snelling now faces charges including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and hiding the birth of an infant.

She is a member of the University of Kentucky’s STUNT cheerleading team, according to the school’s athletics website.

A university spokesperson confirmed Snelling has competed on the team for the past three seasons and advised that other inquiries should be directed to the Lexington Police.

Snelling is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center while the investigation continues.
