JJ “Dejocular” Okonkwo is a Nigerian DJ, broadcaster, producer, and actor with almost 20 years of experience.
He has worked with Cool FM and News Central TV and appeared in both Nollywood and Hollywood North productions.
Born in Lagos into a family of singers, JJ grew up surrounded by music. “My father’s records and my brother’s cassette tapes inspired my love for music from a young age,” he recalls.
In 2023, after moving to Canada, JJ noticed that most radio stations mainly played Western hits. “It felt disconnected from the multicultural reality of Canada. I saw a gap that needed to be filled,” he says.
To address this, he created Inside Afrobeats, a four-part audio series exploring the history and global influence of Afrobeats. The series airs on CBC Radio channels in Edmonton, Newfoundland, and Vancouver, and it can be streamed online at cbc.ca/insideafrobeats (Canada only).
“The goal is to showcase Afrobeats—the music, the stories, and the culture,” JJ explains. “Afrobeats is an identity. It mixes with any genre but stays proudly African. The beats bring joy, and the lyrics tell powerful stories.”
Through Inside Afrobeats, JJ “Dejocular” Okonkwo ensures that listeners around the world experience the energy, heritage, and pride of African music.
