Rivers: I’m Satisfied With Conduct Of LG Election – Wike Says

Nyesom Wike, the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, has said he is pleased with how the local government elections in Rivers State are being conducted. He praised residents for coming out in large numbers to participate in choosing their local leaders.

Wike made these comments while speaking to journalists after voting at Polling Unit 007 in Ward 9 of Rumuepirikom Kingdom, Obia/Akpor Local Government Area.

He thanked the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for carrying out a smooth election process and urged media outlets to understand that voter turnout may differ between residential and commercial areas.

He explained that commercial zones naturally have fewer voters, while residential areas usually see higher participation. Wike noted that his own community had good turnout and expected similar levels in other residential areas.

He added that people across Rivers State are excited to vote and support candidates from their own communities, sharing that he had received reports from rural areas showing strong voter engagement.

The minister also addressed concerns about the Supreme Court possibly nullifying the election. He clarified that the current process is fully legal, so residents can cast their votes without fear.

According to Wike, holding the election ensures local governments will receive funds directly from the federation account, as ordered by the Supreme Court, which will strengthen governance at the grassroots level.

He emphasized that the elections are vital for stability at the local level and thanked President Buhari for supporting the process. Wike explained that without elected local officials, funds would not reach local governments.

He concluded by noting that with emergency rules set to end in September, the elections complete the governance system, and once elected officials are sworn in, local governments can function fully and receive funds directly.
