Crisis broke out in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, on Friday, August 29, after residents protested the killing of an unarmed man, allegedly shot by police officers. The incident has sparked fresh outrage over police misconduct in the community.
The shooting happened on Thursday night in Onosa, where one man was killed and two others were badly injured. The injured victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
By early Friday, angry youths and residents flooded the streets in protest. They blocked major roads, stopped traffic, and expressed their frustration.
Videos shared online showed people chanting, burning tyres, and marching in large numbers. In one video, the victim’s body was seen inside a vehicle.
Residents who witnessed the incident confirmed that the demonstration was triggered by the killing of an unarmed man by police officers. Others noted that two injured victims were still in the hospital.
Community members accused the police of using unnecessary force and demanded justice. They insisted that the officers responsible must be identified and held accountable.
In response, the Nigerian Police Force released a statement urging calm.
They assured the public that the injured were receiving treatment and promised that investigations into the shooting had already begun.
