Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer be under Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump canceled an extension that was previously approved by President Joe Biden, according to a letter obtained by CNN.
The letter, called “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday, explains:
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
By law, former vice presidents get six months of protection after leaving office, which for Harris ended on July 21. Biden had secretly extended her security for another year through an executive directive.
With her upcoming multi-city book tour for 107 Days, Harris will lose not only the agents guarding her, but also access to constant security updates, including monitoring of threats through emails, texts, social media, and in-person events. Her Los Angeles residence will also no longer have federal protection.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” said Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris.
Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, already lost his personal Secret Service detail on July 21, following the standard rules for spouses of former vice presidents.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was informed about the change on Thursday. His spokesperson, Bob Salladay, criticized the move, saying, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also spoke against the decision, calling it “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation, including firings and revoking security clearances.
This puts the former Vice President in danger, and I look forward to working with the Governor to ensure her safety in Los Angeles.”
Neither the White House nor the Secret Service immediately responded to CNN’s requests for comment.
Trump’s decision comes as Harris begins more public engagements, and it raises concerns about the high costs and logistics of private security, which could cost millions annually.
