2027: Rotimi Amaechi denies plans to forfeit his presidential ambition, declares interest in ADC presidential ticket

Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied reports suggesting he plans to abandon his 2027 presidential ambition.

Amaechi spoke with journalists in Kano after a meeting with a coalition of traders, stressing that the ADC presidential primary must be open and fair. He made it clear that he will not step down for any other aspirant.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Amaechi confirmed that he will contest the ADC ticket, expressing confidence that, by God’s grace, he would win and face President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He stated that it is up to Nigerians to decide who they want as leader.

The former minister noted that every aspirant has the right to contest, describing the race as a positive sign for internal democracy within the party.

Speaking on the state of the nation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Amaechi criticized the government, saying Nigerians are frustrated with its policies and leadership style. According to him, citizens are suffering across all regions, not just in the South.

He accused Tinubu of sidelining many Nigerians in his appointments, claiming that only a few close allies benefit while even members of his Yoruba base feel excluded.

When asked about possible zoning of the ADC presidential ticket to the South, Amaechi said the decision rests with the party leadership but maintained that he remains firmly in the race.

Amaechi described himself as one of the most prepared candidates, arguing that his candidacy represents unity. He added that unlike others, his experience and background make him capable of bridging divides between the South, South-East, South-West, and the North.
