The Rivers State Government has reacted to a viral video showing a police officer, Joshua Nyian, accused of being involved in drug trafficking.
In Nkpolu community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, some youths attacked the officer and two others, claiming they were using hard drugs.
The community youth leadership reportedly raided a suspected drug spot and arrested three people, including the officer.
The Rivers State Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Grace Iringe, denied the drug allegations, saying the officer was framed by a youth leader who had personal issues with him over his pregnant girlfriend.
According to the police, Inspector Joshua Nyian reported the case on August 24, 2025. He explained that while visiting his pregnant lover in Nkpolu earlier that day, he was suddenly attacked by the Nkpolu Youth President, the Community Chairman, and about twenty other youths.
The officer said he was beaten, dragged to the main road, stripped of his ID card and phone, and forced to give them seventy-eight thousand naira. The attackers also filmed the incident and shared the video online.
He further alleged that the Nkpolu Youth President had been making advances at his pregnant girlfriend, which may have motivated the assault.
Police confirmed that the officer’s statement was recorded, and medical attention was provided.
The command added that efforts are ongoing to bring the youth president and others involved to face justice. They also warned communities against taking the law into their own hands.
