US President Donald Trump has warned that he may send National Guard troops to Baltimore, raising tensions with Democratic leaders. This is part of his effort to tackle crime and immigration in major cities.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump called Baltimore a “crime-ridden” city and said he would deploy troops if Maryland Governor Wes Moore needed help, comparing the situation to California Governor Gavin Newsom. He claimed federal intervention could quickly reduce crime, pointing to recent deployments in Washington, D.C.
Governor Moore responded sharply, accusing Trump of using “1980s scare tactics” and inviting him to walk through Baltimore to see the city’s progress, joking that a golf cart could make it easier.
Moore also noted that the city’s homicide rate has fallen more than 20% since he took office. Trump countered by saying Moore should fix the city before his visit and threatened to withhold federal funding connected to a collapsed bridge.
This exchange reflects the growing clash between Trump and Democratic governors over the use of military force in American cities.
Earlier this month, Trump sent nearly 5,000 troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration enforcement protests, which Governor Newsom strongly opposed. Troops were also deployed to Washington, D.C., where they recently started carrying weapons.
Reports suggest Chicago could be next, with Trump stating he wants to make cities safer and hinting at possible action in New York as well.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson rejected the idea, criticizing Trump and Republicans for trying to portray themselves as champions of “law and order.” Chicago police reported 573 homicides in 2024, down 8% from the previous year.
While the Pentagon has not confirmed any troop deployments there, Trump continues to suggest that more Democratic-led cities may face federal military intervention.
