Nigeria’s Justice System Favours The Wealthy, Failing The Poor – Sultan of Sokoto Raises Alarm

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has strongly criticized Nigeria’s justice system, saying it does not treat citizens fairly.

He explained that the system mostly benefits the wealthy, while the poor continue to suffer without justice.

Speaking in Enugu on Sunday during the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference, the Sultan said corruption and inequality are weakening the courts.

According to him, justice is now like something that can be bought, leaving the poor as victims while the rich commit crimes and go free.

He warned that this unfair situation is creating anger, distrust, and could even lead to violence. He added that if people lose faith in the courts, they may start seeking justice by themselves.

The Sultan called on lawyers to stand for truth and fairness above money or personal gain. He said that only when the legal profession sets a good example can the public trust the justice system again.

Experts believe that a justice system that favors the rich discourages investors, increases crime, and damages democracy.

Reports from civil society also show that Nigerian prisons are overcrowded with people still waiting for trial, many of whom cannot pay for lawyers or bail.

The Sultan’s message reflects long-standing concerns about corruption and inequality in Nigeria’s legal sector.

His remarks highlight the urgent need for reforms such as transparent court procedures, affordable legal aid, and stronger monitoring of judicial activities.
