A 22-year-old asylum seeker was arrested after the killing of 17-year-old Lisa, who was fatally stabbed while trying to call the police about being followed.
Lisa was cycling home to Abcoude after a night out at around 3:30 a.m. She made a distress call to emergency services, but the attack happened before her call connected.
Her body, with multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest, was later found near the secondary school she had recently graduated from.
Authorities said the suspect had been arrested just days earlier for allegedly raping a woman on August 15 and another assault on August 10. He was staying at a reception center for asylum seekers in Amsterdam.
Lisa’s death has caused deep shock across the Netherlands. People left flowers and notes at the scene, and Ajax football fans honored her with a moment of silence and banners at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Lisa’s family expressed their grief, saying: “Our hearts are broken. We hope to mourn Lisa in peace. We are deeply grateful for the support from friends, family, and neighbors.”
The incident has reignited discussions about public safety and asylum policies. A “Reclaim the Night” march was held after Dutch actress and writer Nienke Gravemade shared a poem remembering Lisa, highlighting the red handbag she carried on her bike as she cycled that fateful night.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward, especially witnesses seen on CCTV, including a scooter rider, a Biro microcar, and a delivery van near the crime scene.
Officials stressed that the exact route and events between Lisa leaving Leidseplein and the discovery of her body remain unclear.
Over 500 people joined a protest in Rotterdam against femicide, holding signs such as “She had dreams, no grave needed” and “Not all men, but always men.”
The Netherlands has been facing political unrest over asylum policies, which contributed to the collapse of the Dutch government in June after far-right politician Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the coalition.
