Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared that voter registration is no longer just a civic responsibility but a compulsory duty for every eligible resident in the state.
The governor made this announcement on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness at his office. He charged the committee with the responsibility of ensuring that at least 10 million people are registered in the ongoing nationwide exercise.
Representing the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, described the assignment as tough but very important. He explained that the target is for Kano to record an additional five million registered voters before the exercise ends.
According to him, the committee is expected to monitor polling units across the state and make sure citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards. He also urged them to work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure voter cards are made available.
Ibrahim noted that Kano is the most populous state in the country with a high level of political awareness. He encouraged those who were unable to vote in the past to use this opportunity, adding that the governor is keenly monitoring the exercise.
He stressed that only through proper voter registration can Kano choose leaders of integrity who are committed to development.
In his response, the chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, described the assignment as a call to service and assured that the team is ready to carry out the responsibility diligently.
