Nigerian singer and entertainer, Speed Darlington, has urged President Bola Tinubu to implement reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.
In a video shared on Saturday, August 23, Speed Darlington said that the government should not focus solely on improving Nigeria’s economy and GDP but also on ensuring the safety and rights of its citizens.
He added, “Mr. President, before your term ends, whether you get re-elected or not, try to leave a positive mark.
Leadership isn’t just about the economy. Many people are complaining about you. Few love you, mostly those you employed. Even your own community is unhappy with you.”
As an Igbo man, Speed Darlington advised the president on a way to be remembered positively. “If you want people to respect and remember you, reform the police.
The Nigerian police often violate human rights, and it seems they only feel their job is done when they oppress citizens.”
He specifically mentioned the need for proper police procedures. “Please, before your term ends, speak with your Yoruba brother, the Inspector General.
Arresting people before investigating them is a clear violation of human rights. Investigation should come first, not detention.”
Speed Darlington also shared his personal experience with police abuse. “I was detained for two months even after a judge ordered my release.
The law allows only 28 days for investigation, but they held me longer just because they could. If you pay them, they may act against your enemy. I have felt it firsthand.”
