NFF Reacts To Taribo West’s Allegations, Says It Supported Super Eagles Legends Peter Rufai, Christian Chukwu’s Families

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to claims by former Super Eagles defender Taribo West that Nigerian football legends are often abandoned.

The federation explained that it actually gave financial assistance to the families of late goalkeeper Peter Rufai and late captain Christian Chukwu.

In a statement released on X, the NFF said it has always stood by the families of football icons who served the nation. It mentioned that during the burial rites of Christian Chukwu, it supported the family financially and was represented by officials including Chief George Aluo, Barr. Okey Obi, and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi.

The federation added that it also provided financial help at the funeral of Peter Rufai in Lagos, with its representatives including Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and Dr. Ademola Olajire.

According to the NFF, it honoured their contributions, celebrated their legacy, and promised ongoing support for their families.

Despite this clarification, many Nigerians had expressed anger that Rufai’s family reportedly struggled to raise money for his burial. Videos from the ceremony showed ex-players openly lamenting the neglect of former football heroes.

During the service, Taribo West strongly criticised both the Lagos State Government and the NFF, saying they left Rufai’s family to seek financial help from friends and colleagues.

He said it was shameful and vowed that he would never allow his son to play for Nigeria because of how poorly players are treated after their careers.

The former defender became emotional as he admitted Rufai’s death shook him deeply. He explained that he did not cry when he lost both his parents, but could not hold back tears at Rufai’s passing.

Taribo further linked Rufai’s case to the treatment of other football legends such as Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oliha, Yisa Sofoluwe, and Rashidi Yekini. He argued that these cases show a consistent pattern of neglect from both the government and football authorities.

He described the situation as madness and an embarrassment to the nation, saying no player who fought for Nigeria should be treated in such a way.

According to him, the shameful neglect of football heroes has proven that the country does not value those who dedicated their lives to its glory.
