I Took Inspiration From S*x Workers For ‘To Kill A Monkey’ Role – Actress, Sunshine Rosman Reveals

Sunshine Rosman revealed that her mother is from Imo State while her father was Canadian. She grew up in different areas of Lagos including Ijeshatedo, Magodo, Bode Thomas, and later moved back to Ijesha.

She described herself as a daddy’s girl and remembered how her father loved spending time with her and even cooked for the family sometimes.

Acting, according to her, has always been a part of her life. She and her sisters often put together plays and songs for their father when he returned from work. Even when he was tired, he applauded them and encouraged their creativity.

She recalled being inspired by Marilyn Monroe, not only because of her beauty but also her strong screen presence. That was when she decided she wanted to become an actress.

Although she did not copy Monroe’s style directly, Sunshine explained that the Hollywood star influenced her. She admired the way Monroe brightened every room she walked into. Even today, she sometimes places Marilyn Monroe on her mood board when choosing what to wear.

Her role in To Kill a Monkey came with a challenge as it clashed with her school exams. At first, she thought she had missed the opportunity, but later she was called back to join the cast.

Interestingly, before she got the official call, she had already told people she would star in the movie. The dream eventually came true, and everything worked out in her favour.

Reflecting on the movie, she said it taught her that no one is completely innocent, as every character had both strengths and flaws. From her character’s point of view, the lesson was clear—when life pushes you down, you should not remain there but rise and change the story.

She explained that she uses “anchors” to bring her characters to life. These could be people she observes, objects, or her personal experiences. For Amanda Sparkles in To Kill a Monkey, she studied high-class Lagos socialites and blended their traits with her own observations.

She added that sometimes she sits in clubs just to watch how people behave, and above all, she relies on God’s grace.

Sunshine also spoke about the rumour that she speaks French fluently. She clarified that she only studied basic French at Alliance Française and is not fluent, although she can understand some words if spoken slowly.

She said she is passionate about learning languages and is willing to study any culture or language if a role requires it. To her, being multilingual means more acting opportunities.

Talking about her mixed Nigerian and Canadian heritage, she explained that it sometimes creates challenges in casting. She does not fully look Nigerian, but she also doesn’t completely look foreign, which often makes producers rethink how to place her in a family role.

She praised fellow actor Bucci Franklin, calling him a talented and kind person. According to her, working with him is always a privilege, and she looks forward to doing more projects with him.

Giving back to society is also important to her. Her family has long been involved in charity, with her mother recently opening an orphanage in Abia State for about eight girls. She said charity work has always been part of her life and will continue to be.

Looking at her future, Sunshine said she does not want to limit herself to Nollywood alone. She dreams of working in Hollywood, Bollywood, and other film industries around the world.

Her goal is to become an international actress who takes on challenging roles that push her beyond her comfort zone.

She also shared that she and her mother share the same birthday, which she once disliked as a child because she wanted her own special day. However, as she grew older, she began to see it as a unique blessing and a bond with her mother.

On her limits in Nollywood, Sunshine made it clear that she avoids unnecessary intimate scenes. She believes many producers over-sexualize female characters, even in ordinary roles.

She said she is only open to such roles if they serve a powerful message, as it did with Amanda Sparkles in To Kill a Monkey.

Beyond acting, Sunshine sees herself as a businesswoman. She loves fashion, haircare, skincare, and make-up, and plans to explore this passion soon.

When she is not working, she enjoys quiet places like the beach or a lake. Spending time with her family and close friends also helps her relax and recharge.
