The Rivers State Police Command has arrested some officers from its Anti-Kidnapping Unit after they allegedly assaulted a man, Cletus Emmanuel Onyekachi, during a stop and search operation.
In a video circulating online, Onyekachi explained that he and his brother had gone to wash his car and were on their way home when the officers stopped them along Igbo Ichie Road.
He said they asked for his vehicle documents, which he provided, but one of the officers pointed out that his tinted glass permit had expired on August 12. Onyekachi admitted he was aware of this but explained that the renewal portal had been overcrowded, making it difficult for him to update the permit immediately.
He narrated that the officer then told him to reverse his car and follow them to the station. Onyekachi said he jokingly told the officer that the offense was not serious enough to warrant such action, but things quickly escalated when the officer allegedly demanded N1 million to let him go.
He explained that he refused the demand, offering only N20,000 instead.
According to him, the officers became angry when they noticed he was holding his phone to make a call. At that point, he said they physically assaulted him, his brother, his friend, and a young woman who was also in the car.
Reacting to the viral video, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the officers involved in the incident have been arrested and detained.
