‘Act of greed, insensitivity’ – Peter Obi on pay rise for politicians

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the plan to increase salaries for Nigerian politicians.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) recently suggested a pay rise for political office holders across the country.

Reacting through his official X handle, Obi questioned why such an idea should even be considered at a time when most Nigerians are struggling to survive.

He explained that pushing for higher political salaries while citizens face worsening economic conditions shows not only insensitivity but also greed on the part of leaders.

The former governor of Anambra State described the move as a shameless attempt to take more resources at the expense of poor Nigerians who are barely getting by.

Obi urged RMAFC to shift its focus to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, especially public servants who have been neglected and underpaid for years.

He condemned the commission’s rush to favor politicians, saying it was both scandalous and provocative at a time when the country needs urgent solutions to poverty.

According to him, the proposed over 100% salary increase for political leaders has no justification when millions of citizens are battling hardship.

Obi stressed that holding political office should be about serving the people, not an opportunity to enrich oneself.

He further expressed disappointment that RMAFC ignored underpaid and overworked security workers, especially police officers, who deserve better welfare more than politicians.
