The Ogun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended Senator Gbenga Daniel, the state’s former governor, along with his close associate Kunle Folarin. The suspension is over accusations of acting against party interests.
According to a statement from Ogun APC spokesperson Nuberu Olufemi, the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) confirmed the suspension after the wards where Daniel and Folarin belong recommended it on Tuesday, August 19.
The disciplinary committee in Ward 4 of Shagamu Local Government Area was tasked with investigating claims of misconduct and anti-party activities against the former governor. Daniel was invited to defend himself but did not attend.
Olufemi explained that both Daniel and Folarin ignored written invitations to disciplinary meetings, failed to submit written defenses, and did not attend the hearings where they could have presented their case.
Due to their absence, the committees proceeded with the hearings, listened to witnesses who were available, reviewed documents, and considered the allegations without their participation.
The committees also received information that Daniel and Folarin had been intimidating party members and trying to discourage them from cooperating with the investigation.
They reportedly used their positions within the party to pressure members into withdrawing complaints lodged against them.
To safeguard the fairness of the disciplinary process and prevent interference, the committees decided to suspend both members indefinitely while the inquiry continues.
The State Working Committee later approved the suspensions. The party emphasized that the action shows its dedication to enforcing discipline and following its constitution.
There have been ongoing speculations about a disagreement between Daniel and the current Ogun governor, Dapo Abiodun, which may have contributed to the conflict.
